I’m thinking of wearing a hat to a photoshoot – should I bring one?

Posted on

In two words:

Yes, definitely!

We love hats – they’re a great way to make you stand out and look eye-catchingly different. Here are some examples of customers who’ve worn hats during our photoshoots.

Here are some quick tips for wearing a hat during a photoshoot:

  • as with any other part of your outfit, only wear a hat if you’re super-comfortable and confident while wearing it,
  • think about the style of the photoshoot – formal, informal, smart – and make sure the hat fits with that style,
  • if you’re having the photoshoot with others make sure that your hat works alongside their outfits (but if it doesn’t, don’t worry, we can do some solo portraits of you wearing your hat),
  • bold colours and different styles of hat are all great,
  • basically, we’ve yet to see someone make a poor choice when it comes to hats, so go for it!

Streets of London

The streets are never the easiest to use for a photoshoot, but if you’re up for it, and in the right area, they can be great for really modern looking portraits of women and men.

We like to have fun at our photoshoots

We know that most people are nervous at the thought of a photoshoot – particularly when they arrive and meet someone they’ve never met before. This lady was fairly quiet when we met, and a little anxious about the photoshoot we were about to do together. Therefore, during the first half of the photoshoot we took our time to get to know each other, giving her a lot of direction on how to pose.

After a while, once she’d seen some of the photos we were creating, she began to trust us and she became happy to try out some more informal things. We agreed to spend a few minutes just having some fun, so this willing participant had a great time doing some fabulous jumping poses during this photoshoot, which we feel look so good and really show off her inner personality.

Did someone say anxious and lacking in confidence?!?!

Stylish street scene urban photoshoot

If you find great urban areas that are on the quieter side you can use several locations in the same photoshoot to give some really interesting backgrounds for an urban photoshoot like these.

If you bring along a hat and an extra jacket or two you can add a lot of variety for yourself as well. That way we can create a great set of combinations to give you a wide range to choose from.

Spring blossom in the park

If you time things right, and are lucky with the weather, springtime brings blossom on the trees, which looks like a confetti-covered backdrop. The pinks of the blossom work well against the red tones in this woman’s coat. And isn’t that hat fabulous?! If you’ve got a hat and love wearing it, whatever the type, do bring it along.

A young girl walking through a cornfield

This style of photoshoot was one of our Experience Photoshoots, where we work with a family for a longer period of time. These photoshoots work best in outdoor locations. During one of these Experience Photoshoots we try to blend into the background to capture the very real memories that happen as the family experiences part of their everyday life.

For this photoshoot we went for a walk together in a lovely green nearby cornfield. Although we will do some posed photos, many of the photos from this type of photoshoot are more likely to be candid, informal photos where the family aren’t looking onto the camera.
