We've collected a set of frequently-asked questions customers had about their family photoshoots, along with some answers - we hope this might help you if you have any similar questions.

What should I look for when hiring a family photographer?

There's a wide range of things you should consider when you make this choice, including the following:

  • their attention to the visual detail of everything they do - look at their website
  • the quality of their work and whether it's as beautiful as it could be
  • the reviews and recommendations they've had from their actual customers

To help you decide what to look for, we've therefore prepared a detailed post on How should I choose a photographer?

What type of family photoshoots do you offer?

We work with families who have children of all ages - from young children to older children. We're also very happy working with small groups ranging from single-parent families, up to much larger family groups with many children.

How do you help people who are a little shy or less confident than others?

We've worked with lots of people, young and old, and by far the most common thing with everyone is that when they turn up they feel shy, nervous, unsure, anxious or less confident than they would normally be in a social situation. We know that's how people feel and it's perfectly normal - importantly, we're experienced and happy with these situations. So before we start we'll just have a natter about any old thing that we can think of - it's just a way of helping you get comfortable. We're also keen to do this with children, as it makes them feel valued and lets them feel more comfortable. Then, when we start taking photos, we'll do so gradually, to help you and your family gain more confidence. We do this all the time and we've found it always works. The following two posts go into how we do this in more detail, which you might find helpful and reassuring:

Can I see some of your previous work?

We work with all sorts of different families - small or large families - and a huge range of ages - so why not take a look at some of our galleries:

Where do you do these photoshoots?

We're very flexible - we offer a range of choices:

  • indoors at your home, if you have the space, as we have a professional mobile studio,
  • outdoors at your home, if you have a garden,
  • in an outdoor rural location with natural backgrounds,
  • or in outdoor urban locations.

What's better - studio or location portraits?

There are two answers - "both" and "neither", as it really comes down to your personal preference - but here are some things to consider:

  • think about where you might display the artwork once you have it - if it's in the centre of a white wall does that make you think differently about the colour of the backgrounds in your photos compared to if it were on a coloured wall?
  • do you have very young children and you'd rather the location was near your home?
  • what's the current season and does that suggest an indoor or an outdoor location?
  • what's the weather likely to be doing (if we can say such a thing in this country)?
  • if it's possible to get outside you'll have a wider variety of photos than indoors

If you'd like to read more about which photoshoot locations might be best to choose, we'd recommend taking a look at these separate posts that we've created:

How long will the session last?

Generally our photoshoots last for 1-1.5 hours. We feel this gives everyone 10 minutes or so to 'settle in' and feel comfortable with each other before we start to get some great photos - for us it's all about getting you and your family to relax, as that way the photos will look extra great. We also offer two longer deluxe photoshoots that allow for longer sessions, which allow us to capture a much wider range of photos, including the possibility of working at more than one location.

What time of day is best for a photoshoot?

A lot of it depends on your personal preference. Depending on the time of year and the weather the magical times of day can be early in the morning after sunrise and later in the day a couple of hours before sunset. Take a look at these blog posts, which will give you a better idea of the:

How should I prepare my children for the photoshoot?

We've create a separate post that answers this in depth, which you might find useful - How should I prepare my children for a family photoshoot?

How many outfits can I bring to a photoshoot?

Our 'Standard Photoshoot' covers a wide range of photos in a single outfit - we do, however, offer two longer deluxe photoshoots that offer the option to use more than one outfit, as well as allowing for longer photoshoot sessions.

Can I bring others with me?

Of course, anyone who's going to be in the photo can come along! However, if you're having photos of your child/children please don't bring along any 'guests' with you to watch, as children will become more concerned about looking at everyone else and this could affect how good your final photos might be - as we know, children only need the slightest distraction.

There is, however, an exception - in the past we've occasionally worked with families who wanted a photoshoot of only one of their children - in those circumstances the parent brought along another member of the family to look after that child while the photoshoot of their brother/sister took place.

How many photos do you take?

To be honest there's no fixed limit to how many photos we take. We want to give you a range of photos from which to chose, but we also don't want to swamp you with an endless choice. Don't worry, we'll look through all of them before they're ready so you only see the very best ones.

What should we wear?

Where can I read what other customers have said about working with you?

We carried out a survey of more than 60 customers, where we asked them to give us their honest reviews about what it was like working with us, how they felt about the beautiful photos they received, whether they would recommend us and what their overall rating was for the service we provide to our customers. The results of this survey were that 97% of our customers gave us a rating of 8 out of 10 or higher, with all of them rating us at least 7. You can take a look at their customer reviews here.
